Does Google care about AI-generated content? What does\u00a0Sehnsucht\u00a0<\/em>have to do with the latest Google algorithm update?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In one of his recent YouTube videos, Neil Patel, a marketing guru, said that 52.1% of all new content is now written by AI,\u00a0but it gets only 4.9% of the organic traffic.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Human-generated content is down to 14.5% of what gets published, but it gets 87% of the organic traffic. Google and other major search engines have tweaked their algorithms to provide what people are actually searching for \u2014 human content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Neil Patel says the less you edit your AI draft before publishing, the lower it will rank. The more you write old school \u2014 manually \u2014 the higher it will rank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ironically, AI is promoted as a tool to get things done \u201cquicker and easier,\u201d while Google is actively discouraging the \u201cquick and easy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is this strange paradox? The better AI writes, the less we want it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The best answer to this conundrum is C.S. Lewis\u2019s quote from Pilgrim\u2019s Regress<\/em>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat does not satisfy when we find it, was not the thing we were desiring.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Google gradually realizes that they will lose profit if people aren\u2019t satisfied with search results. And they see that people are looking for \u201csomething else.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

C.S. Lewis calls this \u201csomething else\u201d Sehnsucht<\/em>. For Lewis, Sehnsucht <\/em>is this profound yearning \u2014 a piercing desire for the unnameable. A unique \u201cstab of joy.\u201d When I think I desire something, but it doesn\u2019t satisfy when I find it, I experience Sehnsucht \u2014 a yearning for the real.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The question immediately arises: \u201cWhat is real\u201d? The mind doesn\u2019t know the answer. The heart does \u2014 but it cannot explain. It can only feel it. The more the fine line between the artificial and real is erased, the more the gap is \u201cfelt\u201d as a desire for the unnamable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Greeks called it nostos<\/em> (\u03bd\u03cc\u03c3\u03c4\u03bf\u03c2), the longing for homecoming \u2014 a concept that eventually gave rise to the word nostalgia<\/em>, meaning the pain of returning home.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Odysseus sets out for the Trojan War, he becomes part of a quest for honor and glory. And he achieves the glory he thought he wanted \u2014 only to discover that what he truly desired was something else: to return home.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

AI, as a symbol of achievable earthly glory, functions like a magnifying glass: it clearly reveals the \u201cfelt difference\u201d between what we truly want and what we think we want.<\/a> When people say: \u201cThe moment I realize something is AI-generated, I turn off,\u201d they are Odysseus coming to his senses and realizing that he wants \u201csomething else.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Google may not feel<\/em> this longing, but the numbers show that people are looking for \u201csomething else.\u201d Ultimately, we want to return home \u2014 to human connection. <\/a>Nothing else seems to satisfy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AI continues to awaken a powerful Sehnsucht<\/em> within us, and that longing is growing. We watch the bastions of Troy fall before its triumphant advance, only to realize:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I want to go home.<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
