They have a case to defend, but they\u2019re unsure whether they can express what they truly mean.<br><br>And that\u2019s precisely why they hire you &#8211; to be understood.<br><br>The moment you see them breathe easier, smile, and start speaking freely is the pinnacle of the interpreting experience.<br><br>It\u2019s the moment of empathy.<br><br>The English word empathy is surprisingly recent: first used in the early 20th century as a translation of the German Einf\u00fchlung, meaning \u201cfeeling into.\u201d<br><br>It is formed from the Greek prefix en- (\u1f10\u03bd), meaning \u201cin, within,\u201d and pathos (\u03c0\u03ac\u03b8\u03bf\u03c2), meaning \u201cfeeling, suffering, or experience.\u201d<br><br>Empathy means taking someone else\u2019s pathos \u2014 their suffering \u2014 upon yourself.<br><br>You lighten their burden.
